Teaching students to memorize (and memorizing ourselves) is sometimes a challenge. Here are a few ideas that will help you overcome common blocks to memorization. Look for even more ideas in this column next month!
• Memorization Technique No. 1: Using form as a memory aid. Teach students a piece such as Twinkle showing the form both visually and aurally. Have students raise their hands each time the form changes and show them how once they know certain parts of a piece, they know many parts.
• Memorization Technique No. 2: Using aural memory as an aid. Ask student to echo back to the teacher the first measure of a piece. The student will echo back each subsequent measure until the end of the tune. Ask the students to echo back two measure phrases through the end of the tune. Ask students to echo back four bar phrases until the end of the tune. Ask the students to echo back the entire eight bar phrase to the teacher.
