Fossils and Other Footprints William Dick
Alfred Author
I have been fascinated with fossils from early childhood when my family went on vacation to Utah and visited a dinosaur foot track area. In Texas where I live, there are also many fossil footprints in the rocks along rivers and streams. They make me think of the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.
(A Psalm of Life)
As a string teacher I like footprints of a different kind. Actually the imprint I am interested in is the indentation that the string leaves in the fingertip when the finger is taken off the string. From that imprint or “fingercut” as I call it, I believe you can tell much about the left hand’s posture and the way the fingers are being used.
